FIG OPENS DISCIPLINARY PROCEEDINGS

f i g --: The International Gymnastics Federation (F.I.G.) has opened disciplinary proceedings against the American apparatus manufacturer, AAI (American Athletic, Inc.) based in Jefferson, Iowa, for selling unapproved gymnastic mats.
The violation surfaced at the recent gymnastic events at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing (CHN).
As required by current procedures, an on-site representative from the FIG-accredited testing laboratory in Freiburg im Breisgau (GER) systematically verifies equipment used in competition.
The 20cm landing mat supplied by the American manufacturer in Nanjing, which covered a total surface of 740m2, differed from those tested for market in March 2012. As a result, they were not FIG certified. All mats were recalled and replaced with equipment obtained at the last minute from a gymnastic centre in Tianjin (CHN).
The case is now in the hands of the FIG Disciplinary Commission, whose conclusions will be rendered shortly.
