In June 1999 he arrieved from a longer journey in the USA, as a Consul of Honour of his Homeland Slovenia.
In a last telefon call Leon reflected very thoughful on a journey to Cologne in December, as the guest in the RTL-TV "Review 1999", to talk with the wellknown TV moderator in Germany, Guenter JAUCH.
"... but, I'm a little bit exhausted...", Leon said, "... and it will be better,
I don't come...".
We will never forget Leon Stukelj, this "little" men, but great personality of this century!

Four month later died his good friend and concurrent in sports, the three times Olympic Gold medals winner of 1936, the German Alfred Schwarzmann in Goslar (11-03-2000).

• Zu Tito's Zeiten war er aus politischen Gründen 2 Jahre im Gefängnis

• Am 12. November 1998 gestaltete sich sein 100. Geburtstag in seiner Geburtsstadt Novo Mesto zu einem Slowenischen Nationalfeiertag.

• Leon Stukelj starb am 8. November 1999 in seiner Heimatstadt Maribor.

Leon Stukelj war bis zu seinem letzten Atemzug voller Tatendrang, machte Pläne, hatte viel zu tun. Wenige Tage vor seinem Tode noch überlegte er, ob er die Einladung von  STERN-TV-Moderator Günter JAUCH am 5. Dezember 1999 zum RTL-Jahresrückblick als Stargast annehmen solle...
"Eigentlich bin ich doch ein wenig müde...", sagte er in einem letzten Telefongespräch, 3 Tage vor seinem Tod  ".. es ist wohl besser wenn ich nicht mehr reise!" ... und dann trat er leise seine letzte große Reise an!
Wir werden Leon Stukelj als einen ganz Großen der Menschheit dieses Jahrhunderts nie vergessen!

Vier Monate nach ihm starb sein alter Freund und sportliche Konkurrent von 1936, der dreifache Olympiasieger Alfred Schwarzmann am 11. März 2000 in seiner Heimatstadt Goslar.
