One of the possible candidates for an all-around medal, British Daniel PURVIS, had to compete already in the first group.
The bronze medalist from Rotterdam showed good performances – he started on high bar with (6.1) and 14,400 points and was one of the 15 gymnasts that tried the “Yamawaki”, but couldn’t get their back off the bar that made that the judges counted only a “Woronin”-element. Only the Belorussian Dmitri Savitzki showed a real Yamawaki.
- Purvis on vault with double twist piked, 1 ½ twists salto forward stretched with 1/1 Thomas tucked and Thomas stretched and another double twist in the final row: 15,225 – a top favourite for the final!
- Purvis is not the most elegant technician on pommel horse, good all-around exercise 13,950
- 11/2 Kasamatsu on vault ok
- Sovereign on parallel bars, with a “historical” start, a "Takai", an element that was created by the Japanese at the beginning of the 60s, followed by giant swings , Diomidov-giant swing, full turn… = second highest score on bars Daniel Purvis wants a medal and took the lead after the first qualification group , followed by his teammate Samuel Hunter (86,050) and the Belorussian Savitzki (84,775), the one who showed the only real “Yamawaki” on high bar and scored the highest points on parallel bars (15,125) with a triple felge-combination, followed by giant swings and Belle.
The German gymnasts presented themselves in different ways:
Local Berlin gymnast Brian Gladow made a mistake on floor, on high bar he did a Kolman and fell at the Kovacs…
Impressive Thomas Taranu on rings – his only apparatus, finishing with a good double salto piked into stand.

Daniel Purvis (GBR) |
Also Robert Weber showed an excellent routine with a difficult Kehre, 1/1 turn, but with a mistake at flip…= only 13,175.
Then Krimmer on parallel bars – with the same elegant style, as we remember from his coach Belenki, long swings into Diomidow, excellent felge-techniques, then an interruption at the normal Diomidow that could have cost him the final… = 14,500. Even Brian Gladow scored more points with his exercise (14,750).
The Ukrainians, not so noticeable, except at jump where Olexander Yakubovski with Kasamatsu 11/2 and Roché (16,325) and Igor Radivilov (Dragulescu, Kasamatsu = 16,050) should have entered the final.
An original dismount from high bar showed the Hungarian Vid Hidvegi who performed from a giant swing forward a double salto forward over the bar, that was hardly seen since the 80s…!

The decisive gymnasts in this group were the former European champion and actual Russian champion Maxim Deviatkovski, who overscored Purvis result from the first group. He started with a solid exercise on high bar (14,925) and also on floor he didn’t seem as nervous as at the WCh in Rotterdam in 2010 (14,925)
Thomas Bohail showed world class at jump: Tsukahara double salto tucked (16,550) and Dragulescu (16,325)
Also Romanian Flavius Koczi should have assured his final starting spot at jump (Kasamatsu 2/1, 16,125= 16.025)
Mykola Kuksenkov (UKR) scored the highes points at parallel bars with 15,225, followed by Cyril Tommasone with 15,000.
The Swiss Claudio Capelli and Manuel Rickli have learned from the critics they got last fall for their solid exercise with lack of contents and showed new and difficult exercises at parallel bars. The best technical performance showed Lukas Fischer – a pity that he missed a grip after a felge at the beginning of the exercise = 14,225.
In comparison with last WCh, Deviatkovski performed much better on pommel horse, while Kuksenkov showed a solid exercise, but made too many little mistakes.

Maxim Deviatovski (RUS) |
A big mistake on pommel horse occured to Croatia’s Filip Ude who performed well through his whole exercise, but made a mistake at the dismount – no final! (13,825)
Mykola Kuksenkov again made a lot of little mistakes and a B-dismount – he can do more!
Romania’s Flavius Koczi scored 15,025 on floor – the third rank at qualifying. Danny Rodrigues from France showed a special exercise on rings with two times “Malteser” in different combinations = 15,375
On parallel bars Maxim Deviatkovski confirmed his leading positions with 89,425.
