Great Britain have retained their position at the top of the Junior European Gymnastics rankings after taking the Team Gold at the 2010 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
The British Team had an anxious wait after competing in the second subdivision of the day but managed to hold of the competition right to the end to retain there crown from the last Junior European Championships held in Lausanne (FRA) in 2008.
Britain finished with a score of 254.200 to take Gold comfortably from Switzerland (248.525) and France (245.375).
The Team of Sam Oldham, Reiss Beckford, Cameron Mackenzie, Max Whitlock and Frank Baines competed cleanly through all their routines and retained great composure through the pressure of competing on home soil.

British Gymnastics Olympic Performance Director Tim Jones:
“Two years ago when our Junior Team won the European title in Lausanne was a hugely significant moment in the development of the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics programme. A number of that Team have converted that success on to Senior level and were responsible for the strong progress made since Beijing. The results today is an indication that we are continuing this trend and whilst especially pleased with the performances, the impact this has on the long-term success of the programme should be immense. We now look forward to the Juniors competing in the All-around Finals on Saturday and Apparatus Finals on Sunday.”
The staging of the Championships themselves were another great British victory, with 34 of the 39 European Teams making it to Birmingham by busses and boats due to the flight disruptions.
The event continues on Friday with the Men’s senior qualifications, with Finals held over the weekend and the Women’s competition beginning next week.
