Qualification Day 2 Rhythmic Gymnastics: Kanaeva first in qualification, two top gymnasts out of the final
On Thursday, August 9th the rhythmic gymnastics competition started with the first day of the qualification for the all-around finals on Saturday and Sunday. The 24 individual gymnasts performed their exercises with hoop and ball and the 12 groups showed their exercise with five balls.
In both categories are the gymnasts from Russia are the big favorites for gold, together with Belarus and Italy at the group competition...
On Friday August 10th finished the qualification rounds at the Olympic contest in rhythmic gymnastics. For 14 of the 24 individual gymnasts the competition is now over, the best 10 will fight for the medals tomorrow at the final.

As expected the big favorite, Evgeniya Kanaeva from Russia finished on first place (116.000) ahead of her teammate Daria Dmitrieva (114.525). On third rank places Aliya Garayeva from Azerbaidjan (111.850).
The group qualification finished with Russia ahead of Italy and Belarus - surely these three groups and these three individual gymnasts, winner's of the qualification, are also the top medal favorites for the medals on Saturday and Sunday.
But for all gymnasts and groups finals start from zero again and the competition is not finished until the last exercise.
* DAY 1: INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION

At the individual qualification, the favorite for gold at the individual competition Evgeniya KANAEVA from Russia didn’t have a good start with hoop, with three drops she got only 28.100 points (total 57.625) and places second behind her teammate Daria Dmitrieva (total 56.800).
Dmitrieva didn’t seem nervous at all at her first Olympic qualification and performed two very clean and difficult routines.
With her second routine, Kanaeva again showed all her experience and quality scoring 29.525 points – with this she is again the absoulte favorite for the gold medal. Her work with ball is absolutely amazing doing all her catches and throws with only one hand, outsight the visual field or with her legs or the back.
On third place ranks Liubov CHARKASHYNA from Belarus, surprisingly on fourth Son YEON JAE from Korea.

Several well known gymnasts, ranking always between the top 10 over the last years didn’t make it to the final, between them Melitina Staniouta from Belarus bronze medal at the all-around at the World championships in Moscow 2010. She started quite well into the competition yesterday, but today she was too nervous with ribbon, made several mistakes and was punished hard by the judges.
