The British junior team dominated the first day of proceedings at the 2012 men’s artistic gymnastics European Championships claiming the team gold with a score of 253.684 points, over two and a half marks ahead of second placed Russia.
Led by 16-year old Frank Baines brilliant all-around performance, the team of Courtney Tulloch, Brinn Bevan, Jay Thompson and Nile Wilson follow in the footsteps of the 2010 junior team in cementing themselves as Europe’s finest gymnasts.
With the competition format meaning that four of the five boys compete on each piece, with three of those scores counting, the GBR boys knew they could really go for their routines and they did just that each having their highlight - Franks Baines’ floor, Courtney Tullochs rings, Jay Thompson’s vault, Brinn Bevan’s parallel bars and Nile Wilsons high bar.

The powerhouse gymnastics nation of Russia opened the competition in the very first subdivision of the day scoring 251.094, laying down the marker for the boys.
From the off the British boys were in contention and at the halfway mark, with a two point lead over Russia, they knew all they had to do was remain composed to take the lead and they did that and much more extending the winning margin to a healthy 2.590 points.
With Ukraine and Romania in the final group there was a slightly anxious wait for the confirmation of gold and with that the celebrations began.
GBR junior men’s national coach
Barry Collie said:
“It feels brilliant to have won the gold; we have worked so hard for this and fully deserve it. I’m over the moon for the boys, the personal coaches, the clubs and British Gymnastics. I went in with confidence and the boys did us proud, we have a great tradition with the junior boys and we wanted to carry that on and once again we’ve proved how strong men’s gymnastics is in Great Britain – we have a very bright future.” The junior competition continues with the all-around final on Friday, with Frank and Nile well in contention, with numerous apparatus finals for GBR on Sunday morning. Tomorrow sees the seniors enter the arena with team qualification (team final Saturday, apparatus finals Sunday).
