At the 28th World Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Patras (Greece) Anna Bessonowa (UKR) has won the individual all-round title (73.950) . With a consistently excellent performance celebrated by the audience with standing ovations she got the best of Vera Sessina (73.900).
The previous titleholder Olga Kapranowa (73.300) ended in third place after making many mistakes.
24 gymnasts had qualified for this final, the 20 best got their ticket for Beijing 2008 today, one of whom was Caroline Weber (AUT), Johanna Gabor (GER) on the other hand made too many serious faults..

FINALS: Individual competition
The individual competitions of this WCh ended today with an exciting final centering around Anna Bessonowa from the Ukraine.
The Lady, the Queen, the Diva -
she has so many nick-names, and at last she reaps the harvest of her sporting prowess!!
Except for her, all performances showed the nervous strain the gymnasts were labouring under - barely one performed without more serious faults.
The individual competitions of this WCh ended today with an exciting final centering around Anna Bessonowa from the Ukraine.

The favourites
A breathtaking beginning to the competition of the top favourites from Vera Sessina! She gives her all, shows a temperament that few would have thought her capable of and is confident and perfect like on all the days in Patras - 18.450 points.
Inna Shukowa is confident with the ribbon, but in the end out of sync with the music, which leads to deductions. She was injured for a considerable time during this season and has not been able to participate in very many competitions. 17.100 points.
Big surprise - the top favourite Olga Kapranowa was also nervous: During a small linking movement she looses the hoop! She looses the thread and performs a different exercise from the one she intended ...17.075 point. This probably ended her hopes of defending her title!
Then Anna Bessonowa, dressed in black, a diva from head to toe - who lived up to her reputation: Whatever the other gymnasts perform, it is this gymnasts with the greatest elegance and artistic aura that the audiences adore. With the clubs she makes only one tiny mistake during a turn - 18.375 points.

Olga Kapranowa with the clubs - begins with much concentration, looks good - until a club falls to the ground! After that she looses her concentration and small errors follow. 18.125 points - the difficulties make for the points, which are not true to the impression given by the exercise.
Then Anna Bessonowa with probably the most emotional choreography of the whole field - her ribbon exercise to the tune of the 'Bolero'. She makes no errors. The audience claps in time, she is celebrated. 18.450 points - she is head to head with Sessina!

Olga Kapranowa improves her performance with the ribbon, performs the exercise to the tune of Russian folk music well except for the end - she also doesn't catch the ribbon precisely, however there are some small errors, she drops a little from two turns - 18.125 points.
The incomparable Anna Bessonowa induces euphoric reaction from the audience, she commits one small error with the rope, but makes magic with this difficult apparatus! It is wonderful to watch her! And she takes the lead with 18.350 points! This is a small sensation!

For the last time at these WCh Vera Sessina performs, with the ribbon. To the tune of classical violin music, very well - but not perfectly; two small errors during turns and at the end cannot be missed - she scores 18.700 points! A clear signal to Anna Bessonova as to who is to win today!!

And another messed up performance by Olga Kapranowa - it is not her day: She loses the rope, has to leave the floor at one oint - 17.400 Punkte.

What a wonderful show! The hall applauds her: Almudena Cid with the hoop, what an advertisement for rhythmic gymnastics! She is 27 years old and in perfect shape! 17.000 points. After her original exercise with the Kclubs , which she presents to the audience professionally and very charmingly, there is also much applause, even her littel saves are worth seeing - 16.175 points. She says goodbye with a rope exercise full of temperament - 16.775 points - au revoir at the Olympic Games!
The applause is even louder when local sportswoman Eleni Andriola performs, who swings the clubs with aplomb and makes it easy for her compatriots to applaud: 16.225 points.
Alya Garajewa lost a club eduring her first exercise and had problems with the hoop also. Everybody seems to be nervous today!
Ljubow Sharkaschina: technically a very good exercise with the hoop, but there is not quite enough charisma, 17.050 points.

Irina Kovalchuk from the Ukraine begins today's competition, she has the difficult task of replacing the injured Nataya Godunko - after all, the Ukraine wants to secure two places at the Olympic Games! She performs well with the rope, has one very difficult turn (two speeds), for which she gets much applause, and scores 15.850 points. A very good performance from the Ukrainian with the hoop also: 15.825 points; the Ukrainian fans celebrate her achievement noisily, but she runs into problems with her beautiful Swan Lake exercise - the ribbon vknots twice, a big turn goes wrong ... 14.850 points, and in the end she is in seventh place to date.
>> Unfortunately at the beginning of the WCh all-round competition the gymnasium is not at all well filled. A pity for the athletes, for whom this is such an important competition.
