On the opening day of this year's 35th Women's European Gymnastics Championships started with the Juniors Team competition.
Russian girls who particularly impressed on the uneven bars, sat down with 168.262 points ahead of the British team by, who won the silver medal with 165.005 points. With slight weakness on the uneven bars and in spite of the nations top ranking on the balance beam, the Romanians with 164.972 could not prevent the UK with 165.005 who was the best equipment on floor exercise and won the team silver medal.behind the Russians

The years of these European Junior Championships in 2014 are in the middle between two Olympic Games so far are of particular interest because here the first contenders and young Olympic candidates want to make as noticeable for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Moreover, in their competitions also takes a further significant step on the way of their careers: the qualification to this year's 2nd Youth Olympic Games in China (Nanjing, Mid-August 2014) and the inaugural next year's "1st European Games", organized by the European Olympic Committees 2015 in Baku.

GBR Junior Girls won historic Silver
Great Britain’s junior women's artistic gymnastics team have claimed their first ever team medal, winning silver at the European Championships in Sofia. Ellie Downie, Catherine Lyons, Amy Tinkler, Rhyannon Jones and Teal Grindle all produced superb, composed performances combining for a team total of 165.005 points, enough for silver ahead of gymnastics powerhouse Romania (164.972) and behind Russia (168.262).
The British girls showed great character to complete clean routines under pressure, demonstrating high difficulty and some eye-catching unique skills which captured the judges and the audience’s attention.
It was Ellie Downie – younger sister of Olympian Becky Downie – who led the way alongside Catherine Lyons. Both gymnasts competed on all pieces of apparatus and qualify through to Fridays “all-around” final, Ellie scoring 54.941 to place 4th and Catherine 54.932 for 5th. The girls have plenty of apparatus finals to look forward to on Sunday morning with Ellie topping the vault rankings and joined by Amy in the final, Ellie also making the bars final with Catherine and Teal competing on beam and on floor.
The championships continue on Thursday, May15th with the elite women’s qualifications.
