Olympic coach trains local gymnasts

Vladimir Ufimtsev, head coach of the women's competitive team at
Planet Gymnastics in Hattiesburg, has been around. In the former
Soviet Union, Ufimtsev was a gymnast at the international level in
his youth. He attended a polytechnic university and graduated with
a degree in cybernetic electronic systems, but gymnastics still
called to him.

Former Illinois coach charged with secretly
videotaping gymnast

A former University of Illinois gymnastics coach has been charged
with secretly videotaping a gymnast in a campus locker room. John
Valdez, who coached Justin Spring at the Beijing Olympics, was
charged Tuesday with one count of unauthorized videotaping,

A teenage gymnast from Portsmouth has become the first person in
the world to get a new kind of implant to help straighten her
back. Ruth Smith has scoliosis of the spine - which means her back
is severely bent. But a device invented by a surgeon in
Southampton has helped put it right.

Mourned Westfield teen was key contributor to
championship gymnastics team
November 24, 2008 (Mass live):
The Westfield High School gymnastics community will never forget
its undefeated season, one capped 10 days ago with a team title at
the Western Massachusetts Championships. Nor will it ever forget
teammate Carlos Montes de Oca. The 16-year-old Westfield resident
lost his life in an early morning automobile accident Sunday.

Rhythmic Gymnastics of A1 Series Finishes
BAKU (AZE),
November 24, 2008 (Trend News): The third round of the Italian
Club Championship on rhythmic gymnastics of A1 series took place
in the Italian city of ad-Arezzo. Azerbaijani gymnasts, including
Anna Gurbanova an Aliya Garayeva participated in the championship,
as well. According to the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation,
Gurbanova’s team - ranked seventh, gaining 91.075 points. >>

Canada wins three medals at Massilia Open
women’s gymnastics event

Canada took silver and bronze in team
competition and Dominique Pegg of Bluewater Gymnastics in Sarnia,
Ont., added a bronze in the all around standings on Friday at the
Massilia Open women's gymnastics competition. A Chinese club from
Shanghai won the team gold with 115.90 points followed by Canada 1
with 109.850 and Canada 2 at 108.00. >>

Rogge Expects London To Combat Credit Crunch

Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has backed London
to cope with the financial challenges that lie ahead as the city
prepares to host the Olympics in 2012. Rogge, in a speech in
London last night, said the Games had survived global economic
slumps in the past. He also pointed out that London will be less
dependent on huge building projects than Beijing. In his speed to
the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, Rogge said:
“I am conscious that we come out of the enormous success of
Beijing, into difficult economic times. Well, the Games have
survived difficult times before.” >>

WADA Formalises MOU With Interpol

Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has further advanced its fight against
doping in sport by announcing that it has approved a memorandum of
understanding (MOU) formalising its cooperation with Interpol. The
MOU, approved by the world’s largest police organisation at its
October 2008 general assembly, provides a framework for
cooperation between the two organisations in tackling doping, in
particular in the areas of evidence gathering and information

Lessons from Beijing

(IOC): As a key part of the IOC’s
transfer of knowledge programme, the IOC Official Debrief of the
Beijing 2008 Games will take place from 24 to 27 November 2008 in
London. This event, which will be attended by members of the
Beijing 2008,
Vancouver 2010,
London 2012 and
Sochi 2014 Organising Committees (OCOGs), as well as
representatives of the 2016 Candidate Cities and other Games
stakeholders, will give these future Games organisers the chance
to learn from the experience and knowledge gained by their Beijing
counterparts during their seven years of preparation.
