Romania was eliminated from the final at a major competition for the first time in more than 40 years Saturday morning.
The team has suffered a string of setbacks recently, including injuries to Catalina Ponor and Anamaria Ocolisan, both of whom had hoped to compete in Glasgow. A transcript of the discussion with Comaneci is below.
In a first statement the former Romanian Star Nadia Comaneci shared the pain eith the girls and said: "... They all cried yesterday, and that almost made me cry because I felt the hole they are missing. There was a limited amount of girls, and it’s hard to start a competition with that in your mind. So I’m hoping they will qualify (for the Team Final) because the final is a new life for everyone. But I feel sorry for them."
All is not lost for the Romanians, however: although not among the first eight teams to qualify for the Olympics, they will get a second chance at the Olympic Test Event April 16-19 in Rio. Olympic host country Brazil, along with France, Belgium, Germany, Australia, South Korea and Switzerland will also be in Rio in the spring, aiming to advance a team to the Games. The eight teams will battle for the final four team berths for the Games.
