teammate Gina Gogean's retirement has, so far, taken the better part of a year, few would
argue that Simona Amanar now leads the Romanian squad. Romanian head coach Octavian Belu
has hinted that Amanar's boundless talent is the only thing keeping him in Deva. If
Romania's hopes rest on her dainty shoulders, she has yet to disappoint. Amanar led a Gogean-less squad to the European team title 1998 and finished a hair behind world champion Svetlana Khorkina in the all-around finals. Then at the World Cup in May, Amanar took home two of the four titles (vault and floor), with Gogean settling for silver on both.The reigning world and European all-around silver medalist, she shared the Olympic overall bronze with Lavinia Milosovici. Only 18, she already owns an astonishing 11 world and Olympic medals, six of them gold. She began gymnastics after seeing a local competition. "It looked like so much fun," she said. "I went to the gym." In 1992, she moved to Deva to join the national team. Her father, Vasile, is a welder and mother, Sofita, is a housewife. She has one brother, Adrian, who is 17. Amanar says she enjoys movies and detective stories. dem Rücktritt von Mannschaftskameradin Gina Gogean glaubten die meisten, dass nun Simona
Amanar nun das rumänische Nationaltem anführen würde. Cheftrainer Octavian Belu
bemerkte Simonas überdurchschnittliches Talent, behütete und entwickelte es im
Trainingszentrum Deva. Als dann die rumänischen Hoffnungen auf ihren Schultern ruhten,
enttäuschte sie nicht. Die erste wichtige Entscheidung ohne Gogean fiel um den Mehrkampf
Europameistertitel 1998 in St. Petersburg, den sie nur sehr knapp Swetlana Chorkina
überlassen musste. Dann folgte der Weltcup im Mai des gleichen Jahres, und sie kehrte mit
2 Titeln nach Hause (Sprung und Boden), Gina Gogean blieb in beiden Fällen nur Silber. Dann teilte sie sich mit Lavinia Milosovici die Bronzemadaille des olympischen Mehrkampfes von Atlanta 1996. Bereits im Alter von nicht mal 18 Jahren hatte sie bereits 11 hochkarätige Erfolge bei Weltmeisterschaften und Olympischen Spelen erkämpf - 6 Medaillen davon sind Goldene. Mit dem Turnen begann sie, als sie einmal bei einem Wettkampf zugesehen hatte. "Es sah nach sehr viel Spass dabei aus," sagte sie. "So begann auch ich zu turnen". 1992 wechselte sie nach Deva und wurde Auswahlturnerin. Ihr Vater Vasile ist von Beruf Schweisser, ihre Mutter Hausfrau. Ihr BruderAdrian ist gut 1 Jahr jünger als sie. Simona sieht gern Filme und mag Kriminalgeschichten. Nach dem Weltcup Finale am 10. Dezember 2000 in Glasgow übernahm sie erstmals die Spitze der Weltrangliste! Nach ihrer Karriere als Turnerin möchte sie Trainerin in Rumänien werden. |
