Russia
dominates, Hambüchen fights
The Russians were clearly the best battling it out for gold and silver
in the all-around amongst themselves.

Vasiliev - Gold |
Prelims
leader Dmitri Barkalov
looked like the winner until he ran into serious trouble with
his grips on high bar and could only perform an abbreviated
routine.
This
opened the door for team mate Yevgeni
Vasiliev, who had had some problems of his own on
vault, and he walked right through. Nobody else could come close
to this duo. |

Second
after prelims, Fabian Hambüchen (Germany) started well on floor,
but suffered a complete disaster on pommels.
Two falls and a missed special requirement resulted in a score
of 7,800 and 17th place after two events. Some athletes might
have given up after such a meltdown but Hambüchen seemed to be
on fire and competed to his personal max on the remaining four
events. A start value of 8,90 held him back on rings, but he
clinched the bronze with an excellent performance on high bar.
With the physical and mental abilities he displayed here in
Ljubljana, this 16-year-old is definitely one to watch
internationally.
