Titel holder Russia still traveling? |
Team-European Champion of Lausanne 2008 has cancelled, but ...?!
The well known situation due to the Islandic ash, but also due to bureaucratic European rules, has led to sensitive cancellations of entire gymnastics nations in participating in the coming European Championships Mens in the English World Championship city of 1993, in Birmingaham. So one did not expect the title holder of Lausanne 2008 - Russia to arrive, as stated by the British head of the press Vera ATKINSON, however apparently...

Birmingham, National Indoor Arena
... today on Wednesday, after the opening of the British airports, the Russians (and perhaps also others) have decided to make their way to the UK...!
The reason for not travelling was...:
Neither the Russians nor Belorussians and Ukrainians have contributed to the Schengener Agreement, such that they had almost no time to deal with Visas for the crossing of borders, since the European Championship could only defitinetly be confirmed (with the delay of one day) by the UEG on Sunday.
So on Tuesday Atkinson only expected about 29 of the 37 registered nations for the mens competitions. Also Turkey's, Greece's, Israel's, Portugal's and Georgia's participation can only be expected if they find realisable flight connections in time.
Wait...be patient and have a cup of tea!
* On Sunday ...
The first to arrive were the red-white Austria-Team and the Slovaks, whose bus was already awaiting them on Sunday evening in front of the competition arena - the "National Indoor Stadium".
The Gymnastics-Team Germany, which still on Saturday had taken part in a country competition against Poland in Dessau, decided to get into a bus at last minute on Saturday morning at 4 a.m. and "already" arrived in Birmingham at 10 p.m after about 20 hours of travel.
* On Monday...
... there was already an easy training and the delegation has done everything possible to relieve stress for the quintett around the leading trio Hambüchen, Nguyen and Boy and to build up their competition form.
After Russia's cancellation, the Germans seemed to take up the favorites role - but patience... lets see who will really be the ash victims in these turbulent days to come...
* On Tuesday ...
... the podium round of the Juniors already took place, and - for the grateful organising team - at least 25 delegations arrived, one is still counting with another six teams, the rest is still open...!
* This is now the > new timetable for the mens European Championship

British Juniors: want to defend the team title of Lausanne 2008 ! |
The British Junior Team is title holder and has only got in mind to defend this title on it's own podium. The Tecnical Director of the British Gymnastics Federation, Eddie Van Hoof, says: "Alone such a podium round means that the youngsters gain so much experience. All are very satisfied, even if there were a row of mistakes, which are exactly what they need...

... in order to perform and concentrate better - without these mistakes - during the competitions (on Thursday) and all are in a great mood and highly motivated!"
So Englands Sam Oldham, has his top favorite of the all-around, ofcourse yesterday he also had an eye for the other teams:
"... quite a few of the teams look pretty tired and the Germans will need at least another 24 hours to be fit again. But we are happy that they all came here to participate and that we will have a high class competition. We have a strong team, which knows what it is capable of and of course we want to defend our title!"
