Sport is very important for education and therapy |
The Hospital San Juan de Dios is the largest center for the attendance of mentally and physically impaired people on the island. The combined event is an integral part of the BLUME Festival since many years. The festival’s organizers around the General Secretary Jesús Telo Rodriguez emphasize the value of the
cooperation. For their performance, the patients, teachers and caretakers of San Juan have done a lot, reported Director Sabina Ramirez. "During the last two months they have not only worked on the choreography. The various groups have also taken care of the lovely décor of the performance", she said. They put the change of the seasons on the stage, let fly leaves for the fall and show the summer life at the beach. Father Fernando Afonso accompanied the four
images set in motion reading a story.
Sport activities promote self-confidence and self-esteem, and in this way sport helps to improve the quality of life of people. To create more quality of life for people with disabilities through physical activities, is also an approach taken by the hospital. About 80 percent of those who find help and support at the Hospital, had movement limitations, Sabina Ramirez reported. San Juan de Dios currently takes care of about 30 babies, teaches children and adolescents from 3 to 21 years and offers rehabilation programmes for other people.
