Yesterday, the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) finally
confirmed the appointment of Bulgarian Pavel Todorov as the

Lopez
'Thrilled' to Return to American Cup
February 5, 2009
(International Gymnast): Nearly
recovered from an elbow injury she suffered last fall, Venezuelan
Olympian Jessica Lopez told IG this week she will be "almost at
100 percent" for the American Cup, Feb. 21 in Chicago. "I'm just
thrilled with the opportunity to compete at this prestigious event
again," said Lopez, who finished sixth at the 2008 American Cup.

(Svoli) has appointed former top
gymnast Jani Tanskanen (33) as Technical Director for men’s
artistic gymnastics. The World Champion on high bar 1997
(Lausanne) is a familiar face to international gymnastics scene
thanks to his long career as a gymnast. Tanskanen competed in all
eleven World Championships from 1994 (Brisbane) up to the 2007

Gymnastique 9e championnats d’Afrique des nations
au Caire : Pas de médailles pour les Sénégalais
February 3, 2009 (Le Soleil): Depuis
l’annonce de leur qualification en finale des championnats
d’Afrique des nations de gymnastique, au Caire, on voyait déjà les
Sénégalais décrocher l’un des trois métaux autour du cou.
Malheureusement il n’en fut rien puisqu’en gymnastique les règles
d’attribution de médailles sont différentes des autres disciplines.
En effet se qualifier en finale signifie se retrouver avec au
moins une dizaine d’athlètes pour la quête d’une des médailles.

Patterson, 12 others chosen for U.S. Hall

Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson got an early birthday
present. Patterson was selected to the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame
on Tuesday, a day before her 21st birthday. She and 12 other
members of this year's class will be inducted Aug. 14 during the
national championships in Dallas, where Patterson trained.

Straits Times): It threatens to be a
bleak year for the national elite gymnasts as they will be
spending most of their time training instead of competing abroad.
With gymnastics not in the Laos Sea Games, the National Sports
Council (NSC) has only approved three international competitions
for the national artistic and rhythmic squads. Malaysian
Gymnastics Federation (MGF) secretary N. Shanmugarajah said the
dropping of gymnastics from the Sea Games has affected funding. >>

Groundbreaking Sports Development Programme

Olympic Committee (COB) and the State University of Rio de Janeiro
(UERJ) have penned a collaboration agreement to conduct a series
of sports development studies against the backdrop of Rio’s bid
for the 2016 Olympics. The signing ceremony was attended by the
president of COB and Rio’s bid for the Olympics, Carlos Arthur
Nuzman, who said the research would be crucial for the sporting
future of those living in the 2016 candidate city, the country and

WADA Defends
Testing Changes
February 3, 2009 (The
Sport Briefing): Anti-doping chiefs
have defended their new rules on out-of-competition testing. The
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has joined forces with Interpol to
bolster evidence gathering on doping and trafficking of
performance-enhancing drugs. WADA is also keeping an eye on a
legal challenge to new athletes’ “whereabouts” codes which allows
drug-testers to track top athletes for tests. >>

National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have submitted applications to

du jeu et entend tenir un rôle prépondérant avant et durant les JO
de Londres 2012...

message. La métropole lilloise accueillera donc les championnats
du monde juniors d'athlétisme à l'été 2011 ; les championnats du
monde de gymnastique rythmique à Lille Grand Palais en septembre
2011, et le tournoi qualificatif de la coupe du monde de hockey en

Chicago 2016
Granted Federation Approval
February 1, 2009 (The
Sport Briefing): Chicago has had its
2016 Olympic Games venue plan accepted, meaning the proposals of
all four candidate cities have now met the approval of the Games’
26 international sport federations. Following in the footsteps of
Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid, the Chicago plan, which places
more than 90% of athletes within 15 minutes of their venues, was
praised by the federations for placing the Games at the heart of
the city.
