How does it feel to be world
champion? - It feels great! Im just
really, really excited and
cant believe it yet.
Were you aware of how many gymnasts had fallen before you went
up? - I saw Lyudmila Yezhovas fall, but not the others since I was still
in the back room warming up.
Did the experience you have had abroad at meets like the Glasgow
Grand Prix and Zakharova Cup help you coming into this championship? - Yes,
definitely. This is my first World Championship and going out to those meets in Europe
really helped me prepare for the big, big ones like here. It gave me more
confidence.
What were you thinking right before you went up? - There
were a lot of different things going through my head and I was getting really
nervous.
|
Did Courtney Kupets gold motivate you or did it put
pressure on you to do well? - A little bit of both, I think. It certainly
motivated me because its great to see the USA win so many medals since its
been a long time that we won a gold. But it did also put a bit of pressure on me as well.
I sort of had the feeling that I had to do something great too, like Courtney.

INTERVIEW with Oksana Chusovitina in Debrecen
- by GYMmedia correspondent Nora
Schuler |
N.S.: In what physical and psychological condition did you
come into these championships?
Oksana.: Physically I am in good shape, I think.
Ive been training normally and I prepared well for this competition. Obviously, the
situation is very hard on me psychologically. But I realise that some things just happen
and that he has a good chance of making a full recovery. I know I am helping my son by
competing.
N.S.: How is Alishers condition now?
Oksana.: I phone him every day. They have done
some more tests, and he isnt any worse than before. His haemoglobin is rising and
the doctors are giving him an 80% chance of complete recovery.
N.S.: What results are you expecting for these World
Championships?
Oksana.: Well see. I just want to be able
to show my routines as well as possible, the way I prepared them and then we will see what
the results are like (smiles). Unfortunately, bars didnt go too well in prelims but
I guess I just wanted to do it even better than I am capable of and so I made a mistake.
N.S.: What are your plans after Worlds?
Oksana.: Right after this competition, I will
fly home to Tashkent, the following Thursday I fly to Germany to see my son in hospital.
From there, I go to Stuttgart for the World Cup Final. Following the World Cup, I have
more competitions Swiss Cup and the Arthur Gander Memorial. Then, I will return to
Cologne. I will probably be spending New Year in Cologne, if my visa is extended.
... Thank you, and good luck!"
