The 29th Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships are returning to Portugal for the first time since 2006, and more than just world titles are in play. The Pavilhao Multiusos Guimaraes, the main arena in the city known as the birthplace of Portugal, is no stranger to gymnastics: in 2018 and 2022, it hosted the Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships. Now it’s Acro’s turn to bask in the Portuguese spotlight, as two years of work from the sport’s top contenders culminate in a thrilling world finale from September 19 - 22.
Thirty-one nations had registered to compete in Guimaraes, including the People’s Republic of China, which participated in its first Acro worlds in six years. China has traditionally been among Acro’s most successful nations, though the global health crisis kept athletes at home for the past two editions of the World Championships.
* Also at stake is qualification to the The World Games in Chengdu (CHN) happening 7-17 August 2025.
* FIG-Preview --: Although it’s the third World Gymnastics Championships to be held in the historic Portuguese city in six years, Guimaraes is hosting Acrobatic Gymnastics for the first time, with gymnasts from 29 nations battling for World beater status in Men’s Pair, Women’s Pair, Mixed Pair, Women’s Group, Men’s Group, and in the team competition.
Sixteen World titles and the entire field for The World Games 2025 will be decided 19-22 September at the 29th FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships in Guimaraes (POR).
Who to watch for
The field in Portugal is diverse but nearly devoid of reigning World titlists. The sole gold medallists returning from 2022 are Men’s Pair Daniyel Dil and Vadim Shulyar (KAZ), whose victory two years ago marked a historic first World title for their nation.
With golds up for grabs in Balance, Dynamic, and Combined exercises in each category — a change still relatively new in Acro — the Kazakh duo have the chance to add up to four medals to their trophy case.
So do World medallists Katherine Borcherding (USA), Daniel Blintsov (GER), and Ivan Labunets (UKR), who are each competing with new partners this year in pair events. Mixed Pair Raziya Seyidli and Aghasif Rahimov (AZE), and Men’s Group Or Abraham, Rotem Amihai, Lior Borodin, and Tomer Offir (ISR), who have stood on World podiums but have never won gold, are also hungry for victory.
Retirements of key contenders from Belgium, Great Britain and Portugal have left several events open for new contenders to step up. Two teams from Belgium seem especially promising: in Women’s Group, Sofie Jaeken, Mirte Vercauteren and Lauren Verbrugghe come to the World Championships boasting an impeccable winning streak in major international competition, while Women’s Pair Maysae Bouhouch and Silke Macharis have performed impressively at World Cups this season.
* Qualification at the World Championships takes place 19-20 September, with the medal rounds being held 21-22 September.
* We will shortly inform about the WCh results after the end of competitions:

♦♦ Acro WCh Balances after the last Final event:
After a six-year break from the World Championships, the once leading nation CHINA made a comeback and won the Nations Cup on the second day of the competition ahead of Azerbaijan, Israel and Ukraine.
Four more world championship titles followed. In particular, the Chinese shone with their two groups. Their men's group, with the highest difficulty of 3.27 in their dynamic routine on the final day, also brought the competition to a golden close with five gold medals.
But Europe's top acro nation BELGIUM also won five gold medals, narrowly overtaking the Chinese in the overall standings with one more silver medal than China (women's group, comb.).
The third-best nation in the medal tally was AZERBAIJAN with four gold, one silver and three bronze.
Host nation Portugal entered its men's pair (dyn.) and Ukraine's mixed pair in the winners' list.
Israel's performance was also impressive, albeit without a World Championship victory, but with 7x silver and 2x bronze.
