FIG-PREVIEW: Six titles to be gained at Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships

FIG- info--: Suspense surrounds the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships on 2-4 July in Geneva (SUI), where the greatest in one of Gymnastics’s most elegant disciplines will be vying for six world titles up for grabs. Rescheduled from 2020, the World Championships are Acrobatic’s biggest stage, uniting specialists in five categories: Women’s Pairs, Men’s Pairs, Mixed Pairs, three-gymnast Women’s Groups, and four-gymnast Men’s Groups.

These World Championships promises three days of jaw-dropping human pyramids and high-flying throws and catches, wrapped up in routines suffused with artistry and emotion. In addition to finals in each of the five categories, a team competition provides the sixth medal opportunity. More than 160 gymnasts representing 21 nations have registered to compete in Geneva, where the only certainty is that new faces will deck the vast majority of the podiums. With Women’s Group member Daria Chebulanka (RGF) the only gold medallist from the 2018 World Championships returning to defend her title, the time is ripe for a new generation to make its mark on the discipline.
After a year that saw the cancellation of much of the international competition calendar in Acrobatic, the World Championships is being welcomed with delight among the international Acrobatic Gymnastics community.
“Acrobatic Gymnastics is one of the most beautiful disciplines of our sport, and it becomes even more thrilling when the struggles of the past year are taken into account,” said FIG President Morinari Watanabe. “The gymnasts have worked diligently to prepare for this competition, and this is their moment to enjoy it.”Geneva’s Patinoire des Vernets delivers a dazzling lakeshore setting as Switzerland hosts the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships for the first time. Not since Lausanne 1997 has the nation welcomed a World Championships in any Gymnastics discipline.

“The pandemic has obviously complicated a lot of things in the preparation of this event,” said LOC President César Salvadori. “But now the gymnasts, the delegations are here, and we already had some incredible days with the World Age Group Competitions. The delegations love the Field of Play and its visual identity - we can’t wait to finally see the seniors perform on it!”
