Nikita NAGORNIY (RUS)

As with women, Russia's men also seem to cope with the corona conditions best: All-around double victory by Nikita NAGORNIY (88.032) with a respectable advantage of 2.168 points over compatriot David BELJAVSKI (85.864), and in the absence of the still banned Oleg Verniaiev, only a 17- year old Ukrainian, Illia KOVTUN the European all-around podium on the bronze rank (64,864). After two times each in Bern (1975; 2016) and Lausanne (1990; 2008), now the Swiss city of Basel is the third European Championship host city in Switzerland, which had to prepare for the 43^rd Men's Gymnastics European Championship in 2021 under truly complicated pandemic conditions. The invitation of the European Gymnastics Federation "European Gymnastics" was accepted by 159 men from 35 nations who will compete in the qualifying competition from Thursday, April 22, on.
This time, the all-around competition and also the apparatus champions are determined every two years, but no team competition is advertised.

From the last all-around medal trio, Russia's European Champion Nikita Nagorniy (photo, right) is the top favorite, but runner-up Artur Dalaloyan will not compete, while the third at the time, Marios Georgiou (CYP), did not arrive this time. ♦ Men’s All-Around Final
.2019 World and European all-around champion Nikita Nagorny (RUS) secured his second consecutive European all-around title. Nagorny, who qualified in first place for today’s final, was in a league of his own and showed off a strong performance on all six events to comfortably finish ahead of all other competitors. The Russian star posted the highest scores on floor exercise (14.933), rings (14.466), vault (15.000) and high bar (15.000) to score a total of 88.032 points.
2019 European Games all-around champion David Belyavskiy (RUS) took the silver with 85.864. Belyavskiy posted the highest scores on both pommel horse (14.933) and parallel bars (15.366). The silver at Basel 2021 is his third European all-around medal following gold in 2013 and silver in 2015.
Illia Kovtun (UKR), the 17 years old 2020 European junior all-around champion, took home bronze following a steady performance across all six events to finish with a total of 84.864 points.
Going into the last apparatus, Ahmet Onder (TUR) was in third place but a fall with his Cassina on horizontal bar cost him a place on the podium. Onder finished in fourth, ahead of Pablo Braegger (SUI), Robert Tvorogal (LTU), Volodymyr Kostiuk (UKR) and Ivan Tikhomov (AZE). Turkey’s Adem Asil, who qualified in fifth place for the all-around final, had to withdraw after two apparatus due to a shoulder injury.

♦ Men's Floor Exercises
Nikolai Nagornyy took home the gold on floor exercise after completing a highly difficult routine [6.8 D-score], including a huge triple back in piked position, which is also known as the ‘Nagornyy’. With 15.166 points he secured his second European title on floor exercise after taking home gold at the 2016 European championships.
Home-favorite Benjamin Gischard (SUI) grabbed his first individual European medal with silver (14.966).
The bronze went to Italy’s Nicola Bartolini, whose close to perfect executed exercise scored him 14.666 points to take his first European individual medal.

♦ Men’s Pommel horse
The pommel horse final at Basel 2021 included various falls and only the top four finalists managed to stay on the horse. Armenia’s Artur Davtyan secured himself the gold with 14.266, with Nikita Nagornyy (RUS) in second.
Although the two gymnasts both scored 14.266, Davtyan ended in top because of a higher execution score. Joe Fraser (GBR) grabbed bronze with 14.066 points while favourite Rhys Mcclenaghan suffered a fall.

♦ Men’s Still Rings
2016 Olympic champion Eleftherios Petrounias was simply unbeatable as he posted 15.400 to finish well ahead of Russia’s Nikita Nagornyy (15.033) and Italy’s Salvatore Maresca (14.900). Petrounias grabbed his fifth European title on rings, following his wins in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

2020 European vault champion Igor Radivilov (UKR) successfully defended his vault title in Basel after performing two strong vaults to get an average of 14.716 points.
Israel’s Andrey Medvedev took home silver (14.658), just like he did two years ago at the 2019 European Championships in Poland. 2014 Youth Olympic vault champion Giarnni Regini-Moran (GBR) grabbed his first-ever senior medal at a European championships with the bronze (14.583).

2020 European parallel bars champion Ferhat Arican (TUR) has retained his title following a strong routine in today’s final which received him 15.300 points.
2021 European all-around silver medallist David Belyavskiy grabbed bronze with 15.133 points. Germany’s Lukas Dauser and Switzerland’s Christian Baumann tied for bronze (15.100).

♦ Men's High bar
Russia’s David Belyavskiy won his first European high bar title after taking bronze in both 2016 and 2017. Belyavskiy scored 14.066 points to finish ahead of top-qualifier Andreas Toba from Germany (13.833), who took home his first individual European Championships medal.
Turkey’s Adem Asil grabbed the bronze medal with 13.766 points.

♦ MEN's Qualification --:

2019 World and European all-around champion Nikita Nagornyy (RUS) has set the standard of expectations in the lead-up to the Olympic Games as he qualified in first place for the all-around final. Nagornyy also advances to five out of the six available apparatus finals: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault and parallel bars.

The Russian all-arounder competed strong across all six apparatus to finish with a total of 87.097 points. Nagornny’s teammates David Belyavskiy (85.398) and Aleksandr Kartsev (84.731) finished in second and third. Kartsev won’t advance to the all-around final due to the two-per-country rule, but with his score he placed first among the eligible gymnasts to obtain a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics. However, this will depend on the World Cup series were one more competition needs to take place in Doha and where teammate Vladyslav Poliashov is currently second on parallel bars with the maximum score of 90 behind . Turkey’s Adem Asil, who finished in fourth place in the all-around, is the second eligible gymnast and is sure of his ticket to Tokyo following a stunning all-around performance to score 84.032 points. Teammate Kirill Prokopev qualified in first for the final on floor exercise (15.066). 2016 Olympic rings champion Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) was the top qualifier on still rings with a massive score of 15.366 to finish well ahead of Italy’s Salvatore Maresca (14.933). 2018 European pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan (IRL) qualified in first place for the pommel horse final, scoring a superb 14.766 points while Andrey Medvedev from Israel took the top spot on vault (14.666). German gymnasts Lukas Dauser and Andreas Toba took first place on parallel bars (15.166) and horizontal bar (14.433), respectively.
