♦ Rebeca ANDRADE: - historical first Basilian Gymnastics Queen! |
Liverpool witnesses the 42nd WOMEN's WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS of Artistic Gymnastics, which debuted in Budapest for the 10th Worlds in 1934. If at that time the Czech Republic and Sweden were tie top nations, from 1954 followed an incomparable era of Soviet women's gymnastics with 10 team victories, which at that time only Romania, the GDR and China came close.
After the USSR had said Goodbye in history it was first Romania, Russia and finally more and more the USA, which dominate the world top with 8x team gold in the new millennium alone, even if they were defeated by the Russians at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 - the latter are missing this time because of the sanctions imposed on Russia.
Now on Thursday evening Olympic silver medallist from Tokyo 2021, Rebeca ANDRADE, is the historical first Brazilian Gymnastics Queen in the all-around in Liverpool.Silver went to Shilese JONES (USA) and the historical first all-around medal, bronze went to Jessica GADIROVA from host Great Britain!
** In the Women's TEAM FINAL once again the USA team won its 8th team gold medal in women's gymnastics ahead of hosts GREAT BRITAIN and ahead of CANADA, winning its very first team medal at world championships, with which this medal trio already realized its qualification for the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris:
... the 6th WCh Gold medal for the USA team in uninterrupted order!

* As with the men, the current coronation of the gymnastics queen takes place without the top nation Russia, banned because of their warfare against Ukraine, which as "ROC" team in Tokyo both won team gold ahead of the USA, and with Angelina Melnikova provided the last world champion in the previous year.
The USA gymnasts with Shilese Jones and Jade Carey also performed in an impressive unity at the top of the qualification - but Brazil's Olympic silver medalist Rebeca Andrade clearly outperformed them and is likely to be one of the hottest contenders for the gymnastics crown.
So it remains to be seen if there will be a US queen on the throne of the gymnastics queens for the 8th time after the 9-time reigns of the US-Americans in the last decade alone (5x (!) Simone Biles, 1x Morgan Hurd, 1x Jordan Wieber) ...?!
f and to what extent Europe's Martina Maggio, Alice D'Amato (both Italy) or/and Great Britain's Jessica Gadirova will be able to interfere medal deciding, the eagerly awaited final competition tonight in Liverpool will show, as well as what China's best all-arounder OU Yushan is able to offer in the final competition.
However, the chasing field was behind the top trio of the preliminaries barely half a point difference ...!!!
After the retirement of the German guarantors of success of the last years, Kim Bui, the all-around withdrawal of Elisabeth Seitz and Emma Malewski as well as in the absence of Sarah Voss from Cologne, the young debutants Karina Schönmaier (31st) and Anna Lena König (33rd) remained without a chance in the finals at this World Championships, for whom at the moment only the reaching or exceeding of the 50'er points limit still represents a serious individual challenge.

** The AA Final starts ... --: At first: Flavia Saraiva, Tang Xijing, and Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos are out of the competition tonight, sadly. In their places, we’ll see alternates Maellyse Brassart (BEL), Karina Schönmaier (GER), and Aline Friess (FRA), respectively.
Other performances — notably on Balance Beam and Vault – also bordered on the sublime. Andrade opened her competition on the latter, where the Olympic champion executed a sizzling Cheng (roundoff, half turn onto the table, front layout with 1.5 twists off) to jump out to a nearly half point lead ahead of Jade Carey (USA). A small mistake on Uneven Bars, normally one of her best apparatus, ate up some of that advantage, but Andrade did not flinch on Balance Beam, where she outpaced most of her competition. And on Floor Exercise, there was a nod to her roots with a routine that mixed Bach and MC Joao’s “Baile de Favela”.

No Brazilian woman had ever medalled in the All-Around at the World Championships, though Daiane dos Santos (Floor Exercise, 2003), Diogo Hipolito (Men’s Floor Exercise, 2005 and 2007) and Arthur Mariano (Horizontal Bar, 2019) have all won World gold. But Andrade’s Olympic All-Around silver from Tokyo (JPN) last year fuelled anticipation that she could go all the way.

♦♦ WOMEN's TEAM-FINAL
With the highest results on all four apparatuses, the USA gymnasts confidently won today with 166.564 points, which was not threatened at any time and was their eighth World Championship team title since 2003 - last 6x in direct succession!
After bronze in 2015 in Glasgow and the 3rd place at the Olympic Games last year, host GREAT BRITAIN (163.363) continued its successful development in women's gymnastics and crowned itself vice world champion for the first time!
In particular, with a convincing beam performance, the team from CANADA (160.563) secured the bronze by a narrow margin, winning their first ever World Championships medal after finishing fourth in 2018, just missing the podium behind China four yeras ago.

Despite an Olympic champion Rebeca ANDRADE in their ranks, who is also at the top of the all-around qualification, BRAZIL (159.661) had to settle for 4th place, only less than 1 point behind, after the South Americans had only been among the top eight 4 times so far since 2007, and had been ranked 14th at the last World Championships in 2019.
On the other places follow Italy, the surely disappointed young Chinese women before Japan and France.
→ In the FINAL only 3 gymnasts per nation and apparatus were allowed - all 3 scores are included in the result. The best three nations are already qualified for the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris.

* The USA team was considered to be the absolute favorite, but surprises cannot be ruled out in the final mode without a scratch value, so that an exciting medal fight is to be expected, especially since the opponents only differed by small point differences in the preliminary competition: Six of the 7 nations in the chase only differed by not much more than 3 points in the preliminary competition - so anything is possible in the final without a scratch value!
Team Germany was missing on the 12th place to enter the final - 4 points ...!
