President of the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), Morinari Watanabe, has expressed his condolences following the passing of Indonesian artistic gymnast Naufal Takdir Al Bari on Thursday (September 25). The 19-year-old athlete passed away after undergoing 12 days of intensive treatment at G.A. Zakharyin Hospital in Penza, Russia.
In a message of sympathy conveyed directly to the President of the Indonesia Gymnastics Federation (FGI), Ita Yuliati, Watanabe described Naufal’s passing as a loss to the sport of gymnastics. “I heard the sad news. My deepest condolences,” said Watanabe. “Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your gymnast and his family, as well as for the entire Indonesian gymnastics community.”
Watanabe is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Saturday (September 27) and the following day, Sunday (September 28), he will visit the late Naufal’s family home in Gresik, East Java.
Naufal was recognized as a talented gymnast, and his departure is a profound loss for the sporting world, particularly Indonesian gymnastics. He had been preparing to compete in the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2025, the 2025 Bangkok SEA Games, and was projected as a strong candidate for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Since September 1, 2025, Naufal, along with four other male national artistic gymnasts and two coaches, had been undergoing training at The Palace of Sport Training Center Burtasy in Penza, Russia, funded by the National Sports Training Center Program (PPON) under the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Indonesia.
During the training program, Naufal was involved in an accident while practicing and was immediately rushed to the hospital. He was treated intensively in the ICU, with all parties making continuous efforts to provide the best possible care. Despite these efforts, Naufal ultimately passed away.
FGI, together with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Moscow, the Russian Gymnastics Federation, the Russian Embassy in Jakarta, and the hospital, have been in close coordination from day one to ensure all processes were handled as thoroughly as possible.
Initially, the late Naufal’s family planned to travel to Russia to handle the necessary documents and accompany the repatriation of his remains to Indonesia. However, the family later canceled the plan and decided to wait for the gymnast’s return in Indonesia.
“We are currently communicating with the family, the East Java Provincial Gymnastics Federation (Pengprov Jatim), the Russian Gymnastics Federation, the Indonesian Embassy in Russia, and the Russian Embassy in Indonesia to ensure that the repatriation of the late Naufal’s remains to Indonesia can be carried out as soon as possible,” Ita Yuliati added.
