"Nadia Comaneci Year 2026"

The recent public tribute to German Olympic gymnasts (Erika Zuchold & Eberhard Gienger) this weekend at the historic site of Freyburg/Unstrut, the ‘Jahnstadt’, (city of the German "Father of gymnastics Friedrich Ludwig Jahn) was, of course, also a hopeful, dignified – albeit still tentative – attempt to honour sporting achievements of an Olympic calibre. “Yet there are countries that revere their sporting idols in a way that is almost unimaginable to us” – so writes the German sports journalist Klaus-Juergen ALDE, a former German TV and radio sports reporter, an avid collector of Olympic-themed stamps and a long-standing TV swimming expert, in his latest philately newsletter, in which he recalls the former Romanian gymnastics star Nadia Comăneci, who rose to become the sporting legend of the century 50 years ago at the Olympic Games in Montreal 1976:
