As confirmed by the Belgian Gymnastics Federation, Belgium's Olympic champion Nina Derwael has announced her retirement from competitive sport at the age of 25. Derwael is retiring at the peak of her career, with her two gold medals on the uneven bars and balance beam at last month's European Championships in Leipzig being her last competitive appearances. During her career, she won 11 medals at major championships, including the Olympic gold medal on the uneven bars at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Derwael was recently awarded the Medal of Honour of the Flemish Community for her contribution to sport and will be officially honoured on August 22 at the Memorial Van Damme athletics meeting in Brussels. She has been named Belgian Sportswoman of the Year three times and has received numerous national awards throughout her career.
