The German cities Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Muelheim on the Ruhr, Hagen and Berlin are the host places for the FISU World University Games 2025.
From 16 to 27 July 2025, around 8,500 student athletes and officials from over 150 countries will compete for medals in 18 sports in Germany.
This makes it one of the largest multi-sport events in the world in 2025. And there is hardly a better venue: these particularly sports-mad cities boast the densest university landscape in Europe and the most sports clubs in Germany.
♦♦ H I S T O R Y- :
The World University Games began in Paris, France, in 1923 and were held every two years in Europe until 1939. After its founding in 1949, FISU organised an international university sports event every two years, which was renamed ‘Universiade’ in 1959. With the new edition, the ‘U’ shape of the FISU flag and the song ‘Gaudeamus igitur’ were introduced, which is played at medal ceremonies instead of national anthems.
Since 1959, the multi-sport event has been held every two years (in odd-numbered years), both as a summer and winter edition. In 2020, the games were renamed the ‘FISU World University Games’ and have become the most important competition in international university sports.
The Federal Republic of Germany hosted these student competitions in 1953 (Dortmund) and 1989 (Duisburg).
