48th EUROPEANS of MEN's Artistic Gymnastics 2026

Since the inaugural event 71 years ago in Frankfurt am Main (1955), the European Gymnastics Federation (formerly the ‘UEG’) has been organising continental men’s gymnastics championships. The 48^th European Men’s Gymnastics Championships in 2026 will take place from 19 to 23 August in Zagreb, Croatia, for the very first time. With a lead of just one thousandth of a point, Illia KOVTUN, a former Ukrainian competing for the first time for hosts Croatia, was crowned European all-round champion ahead of the two Russians, Arsenii DUKHNO and Daniel MARINOV, who were competing under ‘neutral status’ ("WG2").
* The Russian elite team lead also the team qualification, followed by Switzerland and Great Britain, but on Thursday the British boys beat the Russian juniors and Italy won the team bronze medal in the juniors team decision.
* On the final day, GREAT BRITAIN successfully defended its European Team Title ahead of the Russians – who were once again eligible to compete and were dubbed the ‘WG 2’ team – and ahead of last year’s runners-up, SWITZERLAND, who once again took bronze. Germany’s young team secured 5th place amongst the continent’s top eight gymnastics nations.

Great Britain, the three-times champions and defending title holders, are aiming for a team medal for the 10^th time since 2010, following their success in Leipzig/GER in 2025; but following 2018, seven-time European champions (1996–2018) Russia are back in the running, whilst European silver medallists Switzerland and last year’s bronze medallists Italy are also once again contenders for medals.

* The today's thrilling team final decision was only really decided after the sixth routine:
With a strong floor routine and a world-class performance by Harry Hepworth (14.300) – the second-highest floor score of this final (14.333) – Great Britain ultimately managed to hold on to the hard-fought lead and, as in Leipzig 2025, has once again – and for the fourth time since 2012 – been crowned European Men’s Team Champion.
* British Gymnastics cheered: "Courtney Tulloch, Joe Fraser, Harry Hepworth, Jonas Rushworth and Sol Scott put in a superb performance to retain the men’s team gold at the gymnastics European Championships for the first time ever. The team combined to score an unbeatable 246.728 points meaning Great Britain have now won both the men’s European senior and junior team titles back-to-back!"
The Russian-led “World Gymnastics Team 2” came within half a point of the lead and finished as runners-up.
Following last year’s silver, the Swiss Team can once again celebrate a medal – bronze, just as they did 10 years ago in Bern, trailing by just half a point.
Behind Italy, Germany improved on its qualifying performance by one place to finish fifth, ahead of France, Belgium and Hungary.

The best all-rounder was the former Ukrainian Illia KOVTUN, competing for Croatia for the first time in his fifth European Championships appearance (having previously won two bronze medals in the all-round) – he finished with a margin of just one thousandth of a point ahead of last year’s Junior World Champion, who is just 18 years old, Arsenii DUKHNO, who was Russian all-around champion last year and won bronze on the parallel bars at the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta, and ahead of his compatriot and last year’s World Championships bronze medallist, Daniel MARINOV (22), who competed under the same peculiar neutral designation (“WG2”) and, together with him, also leads the team standings (The outcome will only be decided on the final day in the final featuring the top eight teams.)

* Switzerland’s Noe SEIFERT, in fourth place, missed out on an all-around medal by just -0.7 points, but did manage to qualify for the high bar final
* The new German champion and former Ukrainian Radomyr STELMAKH – now based in Cottbus – was the best-placed member of the German team (8th place) but missed out on a better result due to a botched pommel horse routine – the very same routine that had just secured him the German title on the pommel horse at the Finals in Hanover! He could console himself by reaching the high bar final in sixth place, as one of only two German qualifiers on the apparatus, because following the withdrawal of former world champion Lukas Dauser and defending champion Nils Dunkel (injured), no German gymnast managed to make it into the top eight on the parallel bars – once the team’s flagship apparatus!
The second place in the final for Team Germany was secured by the Bochum-based individual competitor Artur SAHAKYAN, who qualified in eighth place on his speciality apparatus, the rings.

Having won three European Team Championships – the most recent of which came between 2014 and 2018 – out of their total of seven team titles, the Russians once again emerged as favourites under the curious abbreviation “WG2” (“World Gymnastics 2”), having already established a lead of just under 7 points over their rivals in the qualifying round:
They were followed by the two medalling teams from the last two championships – Switzerland, silver medallists in 2025, and defending champions Great Britain in third place, then Italy, who had most recently won bronze twice. The runners-up from Antalya (2023), Turkey, competed in Zagreb with only individual entrants, whilst the Germans, who finished fourth in Leipzig in 2025, were just as delighted to reach the final in sixth place as France and Hungary behind them.

It is the true continental highlight for Europe’s up-and-coming artistic gymnasts, a sort of all-round competition to assess their talents with a view to their immediate future – and, above all, their Olympic prospects. The results also allow – alongside the team competition – a comparison of the level of training across the nations; although the development of these young gymnasts is far from complete, we can already expect to see some of them at the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where they are sure to give the ‘established’ gymnasts in their national federations a run for their money in the battle for Olympic places...!

♦ The individual all-around standings in the qualifying round are led by Daniil Smirnov (79.997), ahead of his Russian compatriot Radmir Musayev (78.997), followed by Poland’s Tomasz Le Khac (78.698) and Switzerland’s Ben Schumacher (78.559), who has reached three finals – the pommel horse, the rings and, as the top-ranked competitor, the high bar! However, the best German junior, Davyd Alshanov, is only in 25th place (73.498), but after the qualifiers’ list has been finalised, he qualifies in 22nd place and is the only German all-rounder to reach the final all-around on Sunday. Kimi Koehnlein from Wetzgau, the only German finalist, also has a chance of a medal as the second-best performer on the rings; perhaps Austria’s Samuel Wachter, in fourth place on the vault, might also be in contention.
