Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships 2006... Gymnastics Competitions concluded

Nastia Liukin of Parker, Texas, and Chellsie Memmel of West Allis, Wis., tied for the all-around title at the 2006 Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships at the Neil Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.
The U.S. women won the team title with 183.150 points over Australia, 177.050 points. Canada, with 172.050, finished third and at the final events Jana Bieger won gold at vault and bars.....

The Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships 2006' (April 13-15) concluded at Saturday with the dominance of Asian gymnasts, winning altogether eight gold medals.....

The three-day event features artistic gymnastics at Blaisdell Arena and rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline at the Hawaii Convention Center.
The PAC was last in Honolulu two years ago and featured Carly Patterson and Paul Hamm, both of whom went on to become Olympic all-around champions.
Athletes from the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Korea and Russia are expected to compete this year. 17 countries sign up for gymnastics meet
The Pacific Alliance Gymnastic Championships, set for April 13-15 in Honolulu, will have teams from 17 countries from around the Pacific Rim.

The field includes the
- United States, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia and Thailand. The participating athletes will be announced closer to the event.

Two sites will host the event, with artistic gymnastics at the Neal Blaisdell Center, and rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline at the Hawaii Convention Center.
The 2004 Pacific Alliance Championships, held at the Stan Sheriff Center, featured future 2004 Olympic All-Around gold medalists Paul Hamm and Carly Patterson represented the United States.

Chellsie Memmel (USA)

Chellsie Memmel headline the U.S. women team
Seventeen-year-old Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 world all-around champion (West Allis, Wisconsin), will headline the U.S. women's team. The event will showcase some of the world's elite artistic, rhythmic and trampoline gymnasts.

The growing interest in gymnastics, considerably a minority sport in the islands, presents the question of whether or not it would be sustainable at the University of Hawai'i, and what local clubs could offer to the program.
Memmel's parents, who own M&M Gymnastics, offered suggestions to local clubs.

Gymnastics - new local Popularity at Haiwaii
Memmel was a member of the TOP's National Team for four years (1994-1997) and in 2003 was named TOP's Co-Athlete of the year. If Hawaii's local clubs have more strong female gymnasts that are yet to receive their deserved exposure, University of Hawaii could have an ideal recruiting source if gymnastics is added.
As a result of the national coverage in Hawai'i, gymnastics is gaining local popularity. The mere proposal of a new women's sport has excited female student athletes.
